Cannabigerol is known as the stem cell cannabinoid for its role as a precursor to other cannabinoids found in hemp and marijuana. Previously overlooked as a significant cannabinoid, the role of CBG is becoming better understood, and companies like Medical Marijuana, Inc.’s AXIM® Biotechnologies are starting to research its potential. Because most CBG is transformed into other cannabinoids like CBD or THC by the cannabis plant, natural CBG levels are low in most processed cannabis plants.
My bigger question is what about analytics ? So many bad lab’s out there in Cannabis and Hemp. Did they test for Pesticides ? Mycotoxins ? Heavy Metals (Hemp is great at dragging up heavy metals from the soil as well as from nutrient solutions, herbicides, etc..). The testing piece is critical and that a lab performs random testing to ensure that the final products on the shelf actually contain what’s on the label. Even good test results mean nothing if the product is cut after the testing.
CBD is extracted from both plants in just the same way. But, when it’s extracted from hemp, it is often times, extracted by itself. Beyond CBD, there are a host of other plant compounds, called cannabinoids, present in both plants, including THC (more on THC later). We won’t go into all the other compounds in this article as that would take a book to detail, but a short list of the most common ones are: CBDA, CBG, CBGA, CBN, Terpenes and Phytonutrients, and THC. Generally, when CBD is extracted from marijuana, all these compounds are extracted together and the extract is then formulated into various products, thus giving the user this “full spectrum” of cannabinoids. Generally, when CBD is extracted from hemp, it may or may not include this full spectrum of cannabinoids. So, this is the first important distinction between CBD from hemp and CBD from marijuana. When it comes from hemp, it may or may not include all the other cannabinoids. When it comes from marijuana, it almost always does, including the cannabinoid: THC. (Note: ALL Highland Pharms products use a full spectrum of cannabinoid extract.)
Although low, the original amount of THC present in hemp may still cause a certain level of psychoactive effects when processed incorrectly. Remember, CBD oil is made from the extracts of hundreds, even thousands, of hemp plants, therefore, no matter how small a percentage of THC there is in hemp, it may still have a high concentration on CBD oils that have been processed poorly, especially since the equipment needed to properly process CBD oil from hemp can be costly.
So a full spectrum decarb got higher points than isolate (“decarb” just refers to the process of decarboxylation which turns raw CBD into activated CBD). We also gave more points to companies with a “broad spectrum” tincture. Broad spectrum CBD oil includes a range of other cannabinoids, but minus the THC – which is generally what people using isolates are trying to avoid.
The aforementioned entourage effect is the main reason behind the efficacy of whole plant extracts. There are over 100 ‘identified’ compounds in the cannabis plant. While most of these compounds have their own therapeutic benefit, they combine synergistically to provide a far better performance than any single compound, including CBD.
